THE C2 GROUP LAUNCHES INTO THE TOP 20 OF INDEPENDENT LOBBYING FIRMS THROUGH MERGER WITH BATES GROUP, LLC AND ADDITION OF FORMER MCCONNELL CHIEF-OF-STAFF

Hunter Bates Joins the Bipartisan Lobby Firm as a Principal

Washington, D.C. (EMBARGOED UNTIL July 30, 2007 12:01 AM) – The C2 Group today announced its merger with the Bates Capitol Group, LLC and the addition of Hunter Bates, a long-time aide and chief of staff to Senator Mitch McConnell, to the lobbying firm’s roster of talent.

Highlighted by National Journal as one of “biggest winners in the last election” and by Roll Call because of partner Jeff Murray’s close ties to the House Democrats’ Blue Dog Coalition, the C2 Group and its merger is the latest step in an aggressive growth plan to expand its blue-chip client list. Additionally, the merger launches the C2 Group into the Top 20 of the nation’s largest independent lobbying firms, according to the lobbyist disclosure filings. Bates joins a remarkable list of C2 Group partners that have served in key Congressional and Administration positions throughout many contrasting political climates.

C2 Group co-founder Tom Crawford says this move firmly establishes C2 as a leader in the next generation of lobbying firms. “The inner workings of the Washington process have changed dramatically over the past decade, and will continue to change and evolve into the future,” Crawford explained. “C2 Group’s partners and Hunter Bates have helped to shape the new paradigm in public service, from within both parties and both houses of Congress. We are in the unique position of knowing the best strategies to advance our clients’ interests, and nothing speaks more to the success of the firm than its continued and growing representation of some of the world’s most recognizable companies.”

Through his more than 10 years of experience in Congress, campaigns and government affairs, Hunter Bates has gained extensive knowledge and political acumen, which he puts to work in helping clients develop sound advocacy strategies.  Prior to launching the Bates Capitol Group, he served from 1997 through 2002 as Senator Mitch McConnell’s chief legal counsel and then as chief of staff. As McConnell’s right hand, he handled a wide range of issues from appropriations to labor law and legal reform. As chief counsel of the Senate Rules Committee, Bates worked first-hand on Congressional ethics issues and campaign finance reform. A veteran of political campaigns, Bates managed McConnell’s 2002 senate campaign, helping McConnell garner a record-breaking 65 percent of the vote.

Crawford says Hunter’s sterling reputation, loyal client base and history of results make him a natural fit within the C2 Group. “Hunter brings a wealth of experience and strategic insight to the C2 Group’s clients,” said Crawford. “His considerable procedural expertise and relationships in the Senate only strengthens C2 Group’s bicameral reach and positions the firm for the long run.”

“The C2 Group’s reputation for excellence and its commitment to aggressive growth made the merger an easy choice,” said Bates who obtained his J.D from Harvard Law School and graduated magna cum laude from Eastern Kentucky University. “I look forward to helping our clients leverage their strengths in advocating for sound public policies.”

The Bates Capitol Group, LLC conveys an impressive list of blue chip clients, to C2 Group’s existing collection of prestigious clients that founders John Cline and Tom Crawford have spent the last six years representing aggressively. (Visit http://www.thec2group.com for a complete list) The vast experience of Cline, Crawford and other principals like Michael Hanson, Jeff Murray, Nelson Litterst, Becky Halkias and Mark Zelden in transportation, energy, tax, budget and corporate governance policy will merge with Bates’ and Bates’ colleague Lesley Elliott’s experiences to present a formidable force on Washington’s lobbying landscape.

The C2 Group provides its clients with distinctive service and seasoned advice on influencing public policy.
